Thanks x 30,000!!!!!

A few days ago, I realized we were on the verge of reaching 30,000 views for the month of March in our Etsy shop. I am normally not super concerned with the amount of views in our shop, but for some reason, this seemed like it was pretty momentous. I mean, when we started this adventure, in June of 2011, we had 12,513 views in our shop. Which was an incredible amount. We were head over heels with that.

We have had a lot of ups and downs in our shop, some months where we didn't make enough money to pay our rent, and others when we we couldn't keep up with orders. We can barely keep up now, barely. And are so freaking grateful for it.

Well, thanks to our support group of Twitter and Facebook and Etsy, RTs, sharing the link to our shop on facebook and your blogs, and super high fives across miles and states, we reached 30,000 views for the month of March. Yes, THIRTY THOUSAND!!!!!
To say thank you, we are offering 30% off for the next 30 hours with the coupon code THIRTY in our Etsy shop! I can't even tell you how full my heart is. It makes us want to work harder, make more amazing sunglasses and products, and give y'all more and more coupon codes for being so awesome!! THANK YOU!!!

Littles + A Big Surprise

Oh hi there, pals. We have been busy busy today working on glasses, and trying to get all caught up before the expected Holiday mad rush. We are crossing our fingers and toes, hoping for a good holiday season. To add to the incredible holiday cheer, we are now making kids sunglasses!!!!!!!!!!! Was that too excited? I'm really excited.

090-1
Not only do we now have, what I will be calling the ORIGINAL kids wooden veneered sunglasses (and probably the only shop in all of existence to make kids wood sunglasses...trust me I googled for hours looking) and that makes me really really happy! I love being able to offer something that doesn't exist, and I hope that people love them as much as we have loved making them! I am so thankful that somebody ordered a pair and gave us the kick in the pants that we needed to make them!
047-1
We are also offering sets for mamas and papas plus the little one of your choice. Although we haven't made or listed any other styles yet, we will be working hard at making lots of styles to choose from. And of course, any style in the shop can be made in little version. We're working on cateye's, but those have proven more challenging.
040-1
074-1
So, that's one half of the super exciting news we have to share. Today, for some reason, seemed to be full of little frustrations. Of course, I worry a lot. "Duh," says the captain obvious at the back of the room.

BUT, at the end of the day, despite modern inconveniences of people not taking trade, barter or an IOU for rent/bills; despite us getting to the end of the available seasons of Breaking Bad on Netflix and it ending with an incredible cliffhanger; despite forgetting to eat after french toast breakfast and binging on an entire bag of salt and vinegar chips for dinner...I will always have this face to smooch at my convenience.

Good news is, after the second of December, you too can have incredible photos of your pooch in our NEW in-store professional photography studio, which we will be making public next month!! Oh my god, did I just let the cat out of the bag. There will be a lot more on this as the weeks progress, but we are totally renovating the shop, adding A LOT of new inventory (handmade product and art) so we are super hyped! More art shows, more music events, more of everything. I really am throwing myself into this and owning it. In two short months, my expectations and involvement in this shop have shifted and I really do want to make it everything it has the potential to be.

At first I just wanted to fill ti up, with anything and everything, but what is more important is a curated collection, thoughfulness and making it reflect me. I love junk stores, but when it comes down to it, I want something unique, original and a place where our fellow makers can call their own. I guess, just follow along to see what happens.

Getting back to work. We still have another 5 or 6 hours left of work for tonight...gaaaah!

Beca

Calling All Artists

014-1
Hi there friends! I am so excited, after talking with Doug, we have decided to open our shop to more consignment items. I am looking for artists to fill our walls and our shelves with incredible, quality handmade goods that are a great fit for our shop. The odder the better. ;)

If you are interested in getting more information about selling your wares in our little shop, please email us with some links and photos of your work at tumbleweeds.shop{at}gmail{dot}com.

xo,
Beca

{ps. please be patient with us getting back to you once you've emailed us. I have to run all consignment items past my business partners, but I do want to get the ball rolling so that our shop is full of goodness for the holidays and beyond!}

A Problem with a Solution

I have this problem. I buy things in multiples. Like, I have more Christmas ornaments than I know what to do with, and even if we got a 100 foot tree, I would still have ornaments left over. It's stupid, but it's true.
026-1
And yesterday, I was at the shop, tidying up and rearranging things, and I noticed how bare our window looked, and I wanted to hang something festive to go with the pretty lights I just hung up. Well, I have lots of ornaments, lots of yarn, and this is what I made. I haven't hung it up in the shop window yet, but I know it will be pretty. Here is what you need to make this at home.

005-1
And here are some simple steps and maybe you can vamp it up to your own style. I kept ours simple so that you can still look in the window to see all the treasures in the shop. I know it's not rocket science, so if you get it, just skip this, if not, I hope this helps you make a pretty garland of your own.

And take those steps and repeat as many times as you seem fit. And cool, now you have something that like like fove minutes to make and looks super pretty for the holidays. Is it Christmas yet?
030
We're taking a break from today and going to the zoo. I need to get out of the house and we haven't been in a long while.

OH yeah, I wanted to also post on here, we have new holiday hours!
MON-WED: Appointment Only
THURSDAY: NOON-8pm
FRIDAY: NOON-8pm
SATURDAY: 9am-8pm
SUNDAY: 9am-NOON

I am actually pretty excited to be spending some extra time at the shop. I have a lot of ideas for the holidays and can't wait to get started.

Reorganizing our Shop Space

I haven't posted many photos of the shop lately, and really, it's not because I don't love it, or anything like that, I just keep forgetting. I guess I spend so much time there but I always forget my camera, or have my mind on other things. Like pizza and cookies and stuff.
Hi!
But today, I brought the camera. However, I forgot the card in the card reader, so Doug had to ride his bike up and bring it to me, and by the time he got there, it was getting dark. SO, that's that. Anyways, this is what the place looks like right now. We just reorganized everything and even though it still looks crazy cluttered and disorganized, it's WAYYYY better. Looks bigger, I think. Do you see anything familiar?

What do you think of the changes we made? I really like how spacious it seems right now. We're having a big sale on Saturday, so hopefully it will get even more spacious!

Happy Friday!

The Eye of the Storm

We just finished up a big order for the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art and are getting caught up with orders from our etsy shop, before we start on another incredible order from MoCA. Idle hands are the devils playthings...We'll be back later today with 6 or 7 new styles that are going into the shop this evening.
What's NEW with YOU?

Snake Skin + Bonnie Billy + Panic Attacks

Doug finished these one of a kind pair of snakeskin sunglasses this morning. Our buddy Shawn who opened the local shop with us, lives out on a ranch right now. He found a rattlesnake by the horses and had to kill it. Rattlesnakes are really dangerous in Tucson, especially on the horse ranches, so Shawn had to kill it. He isn't unkind though. He fried it up, ate it and saved the skin for us.
Of course, Doug figured out a way to adhere it to the sunglasses and created these beautiful one of a kind shades. They are strange, I know, but the craftsmanship is immaculate and they really are unique. What do you think?
I wanted to share a song with you today too. There isn't much to say about it except it is probably one of my favorites, of all time.
The panic has set in. Our etsy shop sales have dropped so significantly, and our local store has been really quiet this week. It's scary, taking risks and relying on something that isn't set in stone. We try to stay positive. It's all you can do. :)
Hope all is well in your parts! We have the street fair this weekend and are pretty pumped about that! What do you think of the new layout? I'm still learning and testing the water!

A Process

I worry a lot that people wonder why it takes 2-3 weeks, and sometimes longer, for their sunglasses to be done, and I wanted to address that.
1 // As a small business, we rely largely on suppliers for our wholesale frames, adhesive, and finish enamel. We have tested hundreds (okay, maybe not hundreds) of different products and now that we have perfected our process, we only use the products that have met our high standards. In turn, that means sometimes we have to wait on getting those products. Because we are a family run business and work out of a small make-shift studio in our home, we don't have the means to buy in bulk and keep our stock plentiful. We purchase supplies as we go and often times, that means we run the risk of running out of something. We do our best to keep our supplies as plentiful as we can, but it isn't easy, especially when we are often waiting on a supplier to get their product to us...
2 // There is only two of us! Shawn, our business partner still lives in Arizona, so he helps when he comes out, but 98% of the time, it's still just us. We usually end up working 18-19 hour days. And honestly, there just isn't enough time for us to meet the demand we have been faced with. We are so thankful everyone loves our sunglasses, but with that, we only ask that our customers understand how hard we are working. And it is so easy to get behind. We are about a week behind right now, which means some sunglasses are taking a month to get in the mail. It breaks my heart to know that, but at this point, we are just making sunglasses in the order that they come and ask kindly for understanding.
3 // Life happens. The blackout set us back. Doug has been sick with the flu (and still working 14 hour days) and sometimes, I have to take a break to do laundry, or make dinner. That's just life. These are just sunglasses. We can only do so much.

4 // Would you believe the weather has anything to do with how fast an order gets completed. Well, it does. It gets humid in SD and we are slowly learning that veneer just wont adhere in the humidity. So we leave them in the press longer, sometimes 5, 6 days. It's the only way. Nobody is doing what we're doing. Most veneer craftsmen will tell you it's impossible. But we figured out how to make it work. It just takes a lot of time.

5 // Unfortunately, in today's economy, this isn't our only job. We now have a store front to maintain and I still work 3 days a week at the bakery. We strive to make our sunglasses affordable, but we still have to pay our bills and buy groceries. This isn't a hobby. Doug does this full time. And for the amount of hours and love I put in, I do too.

Now, speaking of, I'm getting back to work. Now that we got our enamel, the glasses that should have gone out Friday will finally be in the mail tomorrow and maybe, just maybe we'll get caught up before this weekend.

Talk to me folks, how do you deal with your handmade to-order items and managing a small business. Are you a customer? Did this help? Let us know!!

Beca (& Doug)

Breakfast

I have learned over time that no matter how busy you are, there is nothing more special than making a little breakfast and sitting down with the one you love to drink coffee and rejuvinate your body for a busy day.
Today is going to be our first full day open and I am excited to share with everyone the amazing boxes of stuff Doug's sister sent us. Follow us on Twitter or Facebook for updates all day long! (I can't blog from the shop, but I will be posting photos all day!) And if you want to stop by, we would love to see you!! (Charlie is going to be my little shop assistant, so you're get to squeeze him too!)

And also, I wanted to give you a little hint of a super awesome fall inspired contest we're going to be hosting this weekend. Here's the hint, in photo form!!

Grand Opening

We opened our shop yesterday and it was so much fun! I don't have a lot of time to write about it right now, but I wanted to share some photos from the opening and little pieces of our shop. I promise to write about the experience of opening a shop and the whole thing very soon!
Our incredible sign was painted by Mike Zimmer. He has amazing wood burnings on display at Le Stats and will have some of his hart in our shop!
I was hoping for a mellow day, but I have a house to clean and sunglasses to glue up. Still lots to do. I hope you liked the photos. Did you get a chance to stop by the shop? What do you think?
