Friendships and Other Battles of the Heart

013
I know I am not alone in this quest of mid-20s friendship, but I have been feeling weighted by its importance in the last few months. To preface, I don't know how to explain how I am with friendships. I am shy. An awkward shy that is hidden by my tendency to talk to much about nothing, stutter and constantly adjust my hair/glasses/boots/purse. It doesn't help that I am incredibly insecure. That doesn't make friendships easy. Nor does moving to a new place, where I work at home, and could not leave the house in a week except to go to the post office and not notice.

I don't have a lot of experience with friendships. I had a relatively sheltered childhood of being the perpetual only child-loner-book worm, met trauma at a young age, entered adulthood pretty late, and jumped right into the social cesspool of after-college HOW THE HELL DO I MAKE FRIENDS IN THIS BIG GIANT WORLD stage. I tried the party-friend-path. I tried the work-friends-road. I tried the roommates-so-we-must-be-friends route. I have had failure with all of them. Am I too judgmental? {sometimes} Am I annoying? {probably} Am I too honest, or say whats on my mind too much? {absolutely} Do I get too comfortable? {maybe} Am I just a weirdo? {yes}

I spent a long time wondering if I was just a crappy friend-roommate-boss {note to self: don't ever try to be best friends with your employees/co-workers while y'all work together, it's oil and water.} And I went through a phase where I surrounded myself with people who I didn't necessarily get along with because I just wanted that companionship. I'm too transparent for that and I'm sure I have hurt feelings and burned bridges...I'm sorry for that. But then, I met Doug. My very best friend in the entire universe. The person who I have to, want nothing more than, no question about it, will spend the rest of my life with. Not to be a big cheese ball, but my soul mate. Doug, unlike me, has lots of friends. He is social and friendly and easy to get along with. So, of course, I made a huge effort to befriend his friends. Some I clicked with perfectly and still consider some of my closest friends. Others, well, they made me question myself again. Am I that crappy of a person that they can't stand me. They want nothing to do with me? Or wait, news flash, we don't have to be best friends. I have realized in the past few months that I shouldn't have to TRY to be someones friend. I shouldn't have to be anything other than my big, beautiful self. Full glory. Not really, I mean some discretion is appreciated. But I am going to be 27 in just a few short months. I refuse to walk on egg shells. I refuse to be silent and made to feel excluded or out of place. No matter how much I want friends, I don't deserve that.

BUT, I am not innocent. I have no filter. If you know me in real life, I will say just about anything that comes to mind, and not realize that it could be hurtful. I wear my heart on my sleeve, and I can't pretend to be stoked if I'm not. I can't fake it. I just can't. And my insecurities can turn me into a total brat. And there in lies the problem. As a grown up, I should know how to do this. I shouldn't be all willy nilly with my thoughts and words. So since we moved to Chattanooga, I have made a few vows to myself when it comes to friendships. I want to make friends. I want to go on coffee dates and go thrifting and go on bike rides. I want someone to talk to face to face about nothing and everything. Girlfriend stuff.

I will make a conscious effort to not be an awkward mess when we go out. I wont hide in Doug's shadow and I will be open to meeting new people. I will not be judgmental. I will not always say exactly what I am thinking, because to be quite frank, it just isn't necessary. I will be kind, I will be true to myself, and I will be the best friend I know how to be. I have nightmares about a few unfortunate events that took place in the past few years that burned down bridges bigger than the golden gate. I beat myself up. I want to say I'm sorry. I want to be told "I'm sorry too." But since forced friendships that have been broken have no real chance of repair, since words that were said can't be taken back, and since I'm making one hell of an effort to learn from it, the future is bright and clear.

Moving to a new state, where I don't know a soul, has been scary. But in a good way. We work at home, don't have any clear schedule. Doug has skateboarding, which is kind of like instant friend magic. And I have blogging. Oh Lord, I love blogging if only for the amazing friendships that I have cultivated. Blogging has taught me that the friends I need in my life are out there and they exist. Too bad we don't live next door to each other, but thank you for being in my life.

I can only hope that I make friends here that I mesh with. I hope that I can be brave. I plan on being generous with my friendships this year and in this place. How do you make friends? Have you had trouble maintaining friendships? Any tips or advice for a super awkward blogger in the world of making and maintain new friendships? This topic has been ablaze in my heart for a while and I would love to hear how you feel.

ps. I just wanted to share that recently, I texted an old friend {who I had a falling out with} while Doug and I were driving through New Orleans, where she moved to. I told her I missed her and I was sorry for everything that caused us to stop being friends and that I loved the shit out of her. It felt so good, that I didn't even need for her to write back. But she did and it made my whole year. If you're missing an old friend, maybe that's the secret to filling that little hole in your heart. I suggest it, big time!

Wolves and Bears

Technically, I don't even have the time to be writing right now, I shouldn't even be looking at my computer unless it's work related, and I definitely shouldn't be blogging. Wait, did I already say that? Sleep deprivation and stress will do that to you...also, we're a few days behind schedule, and we'll get our orders out as soon as we can. Thanks for being patient. Or impatient, but understanding that the humidity, real life, and back orders are kind of killing us right now!

To make up for the lack of written content, here's some cool stuff to look at. I don't really have any of the sources, so, let me know if you do. These photos kind of describe how I feel right now.

And lastly before I shut down completely and go into machine mode, can I please just say that being a decent human being is a really incredible quality, especially when you make such beautiful treasures. If you're planning on buying just one thing as a gift to yourself, or your friend, mom, friends mom or whatever, to hang on the GD wall, I want to make a suggestion. Here it is.

I will be back on planet earth sometime this weekend. See you soon, friends.

Friendship and a Pup Date

A few days ago, I met up with Ainsley and Chelsea for lunch at the Little El Zarape and our pups got to have a little date too. Patrick just may be the cutest Boston Terrier pup around. After a little too much excitement (ie my 85 pound American Bulldog got a little *over-excited* and pinned the poor puppy to the ground,) Patrick and Ollie had a good time chasing each other around the yard, although Ollie mowed him over a few times. It was pretty hilarious. I decided to leave the big dog at home and take Charlie to lunch with us.
Charlie has the patience of an old, grumpy man, so there was a lot of pouting and grumpiness involved. (Gosh, my dogs are so bad!) But after juggling lunch and two dogs, we headed over to Viva Pops for some Lavender Lemonade Popsicle and pup-sicles for the boys.
The pup-pops are so cute and safe for babies too because it's just carrot and apple. Well, my Charlie is so spoiled, he scoffed at the pup-pop and pretty much stole my Lavender Lemonade. I was in shock. But Patrick, true to his adorable puppy nature ate both pup-pops and had orange all over his little face!

It was a really nice afternoon and a good break from work. It's so nice having friends in town (I still feel so new!!) and being able to take the time to visit.

What are you doing this weekend?

Mini-Meltdown, Angst and Friendship

This is one of the only photos I have of myself as a baby. My mom has boxes and boxes of photos, but you already know that situation. So, my dad sent me this photo with my rock collection and I love it. It is so me. Tank top, sweet shades and uh...a sideways cap? Ha!

I was feeling sad last night and cried for a little while on my boyfriends lap and talked nonsense until I realized I'm just stressed out. I'm still sick and it's taking a toll on me, I need more hours at work, I'm worried about bills, and I miss my mom. Don't get me wrong, I have a lot of great things going on right now, and we're happy. But, I'm human and I have mini-breakdowns sometimes. Maybe more often than other people, or maybe not. I don't know.

I was thinking a lot after reading Danielle's post about friendship. It actually affected me a lot more than I expected. I can be very much a homebody, I like being in a comfortable space, I don't like being in a place where I don't know very many people, or where I can't hear people talk, or where I feel out of place/insecure. I am not one to go out by myself, so when Doug is out skating, or goes to bars, I opt to stay home. I'm not a drinker, and I like hanging out, but I can only do that so much before I get bored and antsy. That's just me. But, I don't really have anyone besides Doug to talk to, and a handful of blogger friends who shower me with incredible heartwarming emails, and maybe that's why I love blogging so much. It feels like I am having conversations with my pals and it feels natural. And I don't even have to brave the crowds of everyday society.

This isn't really the post I planned on writing, and has kind of gone off into a million tangents, but my brain is racing. Anyways, I guess I am just feeling disjointed, uncertain, and miss having girlfriends to talk to. My Tucson friends all have families and little children and don't have the time to talk on the phone with little old me. It's not the same anyways, as eating pizza and riding bikes and talking for hours and hours. It just isn't the same.

I miss Alex and Alita, the two best friends I have that I am sad to realize we're drifting as far as the miles that are between us.
I don't know why all of this is racing through my mind, but I had to get it out and let go and start focusing on the positive things that are happening in my life. I'm trying. I have a lot of ideas and have a lot of goals that need to be reached. These mini-meltdowns are just hindering the process of being successful.

So friends, thanks for listening. I'm pretending we're eating pizza and riding bikes right now. How do you deal with stress? How do you handle the everyday challenges of being broke, young, insecure, tired, and generally awkward? Do you ache for different friendships? Do you want to be penpals, skype, plan trips or come over and have a craft night? Because I do. Do you want my advice, do you want to give me yours? Am I the only one struggling with these things right now?

Now I am going to kick todays ass. Keep it real friends and thanks again.

Getting our shhhhh together!

Because our living room looked like this when we went to sleep last night, we spent all morning organizing our space and cleaning up. (um...those are all sunglass and bracelet orders...holy holy!!!)
Doug's space was easy, but I'm not going to lie to you friends, I have way too much stuff. Like picnic baskets full of leather, material, yarn, paints, papers, stuff. It took me way longer to get orgaaized than it took Doug. Look, he's already working and I'm still putting stuff away!!
I put all of my paints together and I think I am going to start painting more. I used to love it. I don't know why I stopped. I guess life just got too busy.
And finally put all of my crafty junk under the desk and in baskets, all in one place...uhh, I still have too much.
I am still feeling like awful. I didn't sleep at all, and when i did, I had dreams about blowing my nose and red velvet cake coming out. GROSS, right! (I am making a shaped red velvet cake tomorrow and it's on my mind...)

Well, I'm off to the packing supply store and then the post office. SO much stuff to mail out. Yesterday was an awesome day and really validated this huge change in our life. I mean, it's going to be different, but the support has been overwhelming.

We have a friend coming into town for the rest of the week so I need to clean the house so it looks like I have a busy day ahead of me. Thank God for dayquil.

Let's be Friends

I am not going to write a real blog update tonight. I'm sorry that this is cheating but I meant to do this a while ago and kept forgetting.

If you want to share a blog button for my blog, Tales of a Tumbleweed, here are some buttons I recently made. If you put one on your blog, then please, let me know, because I love to share buttons and will put one on my sidebar.

Someday, I may do sponsorship, but not without a request for it. My blog isn't popular or anything, it's just a little spot for love and friendship and some other cool stuff. My nose is all runny and I miss my boyfriend and I want pizza for dinner. And here's some photos of stuff like my sick face and my gnarly bandages and Monster's pretty face! Doug took photos of my thumb yesterday, and it's sooooo gross. I'll save you the gory details.
