a lot can brew over a cup of coffee

I can't say exactly why I love coffee mugs so much, but I think I can guess on a few reasons. Number one, its the first thing you use in the morning when you wake up. If you love it, maybe it will start your day off right. Number two, there is such an incredible variety out there of new and vintage mugs, it's hard to not collect them and three, they are an excellent reflection of your personality and mood. I go for the heart mug when I am feeling like I need an extra hug, the tribal mug when I feel like kicking ass, the Florida mug when I am a touch homesick, and the skateboard mug when Doug's too busy to give me attention (same reason I wear his teeshirts). Haha! But really, a coffee mug can say a whole lot about who it belongs to and how they start their day.
{for your skateboarder boyfriend, you can get this crailtap/Girl mug HERE}
Finding a special coffee mug is kind of part of the thrill too. I tend to gravitate towards the coffee mug section at thrift stores and vintage stores looking for just that perfect, new favorite mug. Or set of mugs! I usually don't spend more than $1, and more likely $.25. If I'm really lucky, I'll find them for a dime, which is a huge deal these days, when you can't get anything for a dime! And some mugs find you. They jump out at you through the sea of "Worlds Greatest Grandma" and Santa Clause Christmas mugs. You see them and it doesn't matter if they are dime or a dollar, you are going to take them home.
I found the runner mug at a church sale. It was on the dime table and had a pair. I was carrying them to the lady taking the money, and while she was taking my items out of my arms, she dropped the second mug. I was so bummed, but this mug gets taken care of really well now, since I know how fragile it is. And boy, it must be lonely without it's partner.

Even though I have a lot of coffee mugs, I still think I am pretty selective. I only buy coffee mugs that I like and that I know I will use. I like big, full mugs, in 1970s browns. I like floral mugs and animal mugs. I also like anything Native. I think the coffee mugs I choose say so much about me.

  3. As a fellow mug lover and writer: this was the most heart warming read I've had all day! On a side note here I've been seeing your glasses/frames pop up all over Oregon and it's now becoming a special notice point around town like I'm sharing a silent secret with strangers wearing them. Also: this is prompting a dash to look at mugs. My favorite thrift is both cheap and brimming with mugs.

  6. I love your mug collection, so many great finds in there. My favorite mug is a hand thrown giant that an old roommate of mine got for me before we moved away from each other. I'd been talking for ages about wanting a special mug that would be mine until I'm old and that no one else would have, and she found "my mug" it's perfectly me. It's precious to me now.

    1. That's awesome. Having one special mug is way better than having a lot of not special mugs. :)

  7. I TOTALLY gravitate toward the coffe mugs/glassware in thrift stores too! If we ever get to thrift together, we might end up fighting over who gets to buy the rad mug (just kidding!) ;)

    My favorite new mug is one that M bought for me with Lucy from the Peanuts on it, because his nickname for me is Peanut.

    My favorite vintage mug is a mug I found with a horse racing scene, when hot coffee is poured into it the graphic changes! I may have to blog about this!

  8. You have such a great collection! My favourite mug has given to me by my grandma. It's really simple - white with a red print on it. It was printed by the National Union of Mineworkers during the big strike in the 80s (really interesting stuff if you wanna read about! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UK_miners'_strike_(1984%E2%80%931985) ) My grandad was a miner so it's a big part of my families history.

  12. Vintage mugs are my favorite! I love the earthy styles of the 70s, especially to hold something as comforting as coffee or tea. My favorite mug is a great big Scorpio mug handmade in Mexico. I couldn't believe my luck when I found it at a thrift store (since I am a Scorpio).
