Getting to Know you // Vol 1

The best thing about blogging is that it means I can tell you everything you need to know about me, everything I care to share, everything that I think is important. I can share photos that matter to me, like the cake in this post. I was really excited to make this cake. It was made for Carly of All This Grace and Charm. I've gotten to know Carly through blogging, and was so honored that she asked me to make her re-do wedding cake {for her SD wedding party.} What you may not know, is that when I started this cake, I had the hardest time. I started over twice, maybe three times, walked away, had a bagel, called my boyfriend, paced, came back and figured it out. I am not the most confident person in the world, but I am about my cakes. I lost my confidence a little, which is one of the reasons I am leaving my current work environment. I don't have room for negativity in my grandiose scheme.
You may not like this cake, or maybe you do. What matters is that Carly likes this cake {she does, which made my day!} and that I like this cake. Does the story behind it make is more beautiful? Does it make you look at it differently? Does the history of someone make them easier to digest is they aren't quite your style. If you know more about a person, do you like them more? Do you like them less?
I tend to wear my heart on my sleeve. If you ask my advice, I will give it to you, honestly. If you need help, or need a friend, I try to be there. Do you know me? Do you want to? Do you even care? I was thinking today, I want to share little bits. I want you to know who I am, as an artist, as a business owner, as a human being. I don't know how many of these I'll do, because fact number one, I am not good at following through with things I start. I try to be good, I make an effort but I know myself. Let's begin.

2 // I ALWAYS cry during fireworks, no matter what. The 4th of July is kind of a big deal to me, and it reminds me of everything that is good and wholesome and right with the world. Fireworks, of all things, make me feel alive.
3 // When I get really nervous, I tap my collarbone with my fingertip. Always have, always will. I'm not crazy, I promise. I usually do this when I am alone, at home. Sometimes when I am bogged down with work. I also unconsciously chew on the tips of my hair when I am thinking or nervous. I am a habitual creature.
4 // My spirit animal is an Okapi. They are majestic and awkward, all at once. A perfect specimen of mishap.
5 // The three things that make me southern - I say an-tan-uh instead of antenna. Everything is coke. And I hate wearing shoes. I don't even own any socks. These are the things I learned, the things I grew up with. I stereotype everything and nothing all at once. I also miss Florida thrifting.
6 // I am not afraid of zombies, monsters or vampires. I shiver in fear at the thoughts of ghosts, voodoo and spiders laying eggs in my face while I sleep.

Did I miss anything? Is there something you want to know. You can ask me, if you want. It could be the beginning of a whole new chapter. Or tell me who you are. I am feeling optimistic and terrified. However, the optimism is much more exciting. The terror only lives in my dreams where giant kachina dolls stomp through downtown San Diego and the post office has Tibetian prayer hour.

  1. "I also miss Florida thrifting."

I can never find anything good. :(
I've found a pretty awesome shirt once and that was it.

  2. Ocala and Floral City and Crystal River. Lots of old people, and lots of vintage. I had to buy a new suitcase last time because I got so much dope stuff!!

  3. That's so awesome.
Maybe I'll get my man to drive me there for thrifing.
Sounds like an awesome day trip/date to me. ;)

    Thanks for the advice!

  4. say hi to my fam while you're there. good old swamplandia.

  5. Beca this is the most lovely heartfelt sweet post.
I wish I lived close I would love to know you :)

  6. I think that cake is beautiful! when I saw the picture in the dashboard I immediately started craving cake and wanting to eat it, then I clicked on the post and loved it even more! I really like these posts about getting to know people and what makes them unique :)

  7. the colors of the cake are beautiful together! although i am a bit partial to that turquoise color, no matter what. :-)

  8. love this post Beca! You know I think you're so talented and awesome and I love getting to know you better! I am in fact, terrified of ghosts - but I'm obsessed with seeing them, all at the same time! And my beau's kids make fun of me for my true belief that zombies could happen one day! keep up the good work!

  9. I love this! I am southern in many of the same ways. My friends from Pennsylvania would giggle when my mom asked "y'all want a coke? Okay, what flavour" I, too stereotype nothing and everything and fireworks make me feel alive. I always cry at love and military homecomings. No matter my feelings about war, I support our troops and their stories touch me so deeply. I have an obsession with frogs, tattoos, the color green, children's literature and country music.

I think your cakes are beautiful. I think a good buttercream cakes is far superior to anything fondant. I am in love with your sunglasses and slowly saving my pennies. Though I am afraid I would break them or lose them.

  10. bec! This cake is absolutely divine! Cakes, and especially making them pretty, are one field i haven't even dared attempt yet. You're awesome.

  11. yall are the reason, one of many, why I do this.

ps, erin, they are super durable. I sat on my pair and they still didn't break. lucky, knock on wood, but I am so rough on everything and I haven't broken a pair yet! ;) stay tuned though, because august will bring lots of good luck for everyone, and a birthday giveaway. <3

  13. I totally get the southern thing :) I call every beverage coke unless it's sweet tea. I can't say Martha quickly without saying Marther instead. Also the cake looks lovely. I want to hone on my cake skills but it's such a hassle baking in the apartment :(

    Amber P.

  14. I do the collarbone tapping thing too! I've never known anyone else that does that.

  15. i think it's soooo cute that you cry during fireworks<3

  16. I just burst out in giggles when I read 'spider's laying eggs on my face' ... what an imagination you have.

You're cake is oh so prettaaae.

  17. Erin, seriously, "Scary Stories to tell in the Dark" changed my life many years ago.
    NO JOKE!
    {Thanks for the cake comments!}

  18. This cake was absolutely perfect! We could not have been happier. :)

  19. This cake is amazingly beautiful! Great job, I would love to learn how to do icing roses!

  20. Beca, this was such a wonderful post. And that cake is sooo pretty!! In regards to your question, sometimes getting to know someone better makes me like them more, sometimes less. But I would rather know someone better and find out than, well, not :) And you definitely have always fallen into the "more" category :)

I'm still afraid of the dark, especially if I'm home alone and have to take the dogs out in the backyard or they bark at the door late at night.

I love growing things but hate cutting or using them (peppers, roses, mint, whatever). Except if I had a raspberry bush I would just eat them off the bush, they would never last outside or make it into the house.

I am afraid of talking to people I don't know and tend to avoid doing so when possible.

If I could have my way our cupboards would be full of mugs and our house would be full of rescue mutts.

I am really grateful for the internet for connecting me with awesome people like you!

  21. oh my gosh, "Scary Stories..." I still remember the trippy awesome illustrations from that.

Loved the post. I think it's awesome that you share so much of yourself and your talent! I'm not so good at sharing "me" on my blog so, this is great inspiration.

also, some of my best thrifted things came from FL. Gotta love the retirees.

  22. My brother suggested I might like this web site. He

  23. You really make it seem so easy with your presentation but I find this matter to be actually something which
I think I would never understand. It seems too complicated
and extremely broad for me. I'm looking forward for your next post, I'll try to get the
    hang of it!

  24. I don't know if it's just me or if perhaps everyone
else encountering issues with your blog. It seems like some of
the written text on your posts are running off the screen.
Can somebody else please comment and let me know if this is happening to them too?

This may be a issue with my browser because I've had this happen before. Kudos
